Behind the poem 'No Friends'
If you've read the poem I suspect you would have a clear idea of my inspiration. Life can feel very lonely at times, but that may not always be the reality. Sometimes we don't get to spend as much time with the people we want to because of work, family, etc which is what life is about - one of the many contradictions.
Dad was always mentioning how he had no friends, which was easy for him to believe when he was when working on the farm, for long hours not seeing any other person, just the faithful dog. Cloud and Tassie were always with him.
At his funeral it was obvious he had plenty of friends. The small country church was packed, people had driven hours to come and say good-bye, some people had come interstate.
It's fitting that the poem is published in December, since he died 16th Dec 2002, nearly 11 years ago. He'd just finished the yearly harvest when he died. Nothing like a good job finished, and a life well lived.
